Teaching rocks and minerals at the National Museums in Nairobi

I have initiated multiple outreach projects at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi in collaboration with the museum’s Education Department. Thus far we have successfully connected with hundreds of schoolchildren from the Nairobi school system but hope to expand our work into the countryside of Kenya. The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) is a multi-disciplinary institution whose role is to collect, preserve, study, document and present Kenya’s past and present cultural and natural heritage. This is for the purposes of enhancing knowledge, appreciation, respect and sustainable utilization of these resources for the benefit of Kenya and the world, for now and posterity. The Education Section of the NMK is charged with the responsibility of interpreting the activities of the museum to the public, especially to the many numbers of school children who visit the museum every year. The mission of Education Section is to promote people’s understanding and sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage by enhancing access to the museum’s collections, research and exhibitions. In fulfilling this mandate, the section has over the years designed, developed and implemented education programs and activities to various target groups in and out of the museum as well as collaborated with individuals, institutions and organizations to develop and present education and public programs on societal issues.
